As winter settles in, the world outside grows quiet and still, and certain plants come to symbolize the beauty of the season. Among them, mistletoe holds a special place—a symbol of peace, connection, and a touch of magic during the colder months.
Mistletoe has long been revered for its significance in various cultures. From ancient European folklore to its role in holiday traditions today, it has symbolized unity and goodwill. Its delicate leaves and simple berries make it a joy to paint, and in each piece, I aim to convey the gentle elegance that mistletoe brings to any space.
One of the most charming traditions associated with mistletoe is the custom of sharing a kiss beneath its branches. Originating in Norse mythology and later becoming a popular holiday ritual, the mistletoe kiss symbolizes love, forgiveness, and new beginnings—a perfect gesture of warmth and connection during the winter season. I find this tradition beautiful and inspiring, and I’ve tried to reflect a bit of that romantic spirit in my paintings.
In my collection, I have three different mistletoe illustrations: a watercolor illustration, a painting I created using oil paints and three quick ink sketches.
